Decreasing Anxiety & Lifting the Weight of Depression

There is an epidemic of stress, and along with it, anxiety and depression. Different people are affected by stress in different ways. Stress tends to exacerbate our natural tendencies, throwing us farther and farther from center. Reducing stress requires us to find ways to restore our emotional balance, to come back to center. What helps one person reduce stress may not work for someone else. For that reason, the videos in this Workshop are divided into 2 parts. The videos in Part 1 are generally more supportive to those with anxiety, while the videos in Part 2 are generally more supportive to those with depression.

This video explores the different ways in which those with anxiety or depression respond to stress.

Part 1: Anxiety

Those who are high energy, intense, and often categorized as a “Type A” personality, operate from the nervous system pretty much all the time. It doesn’t take much to make you feel stressed and anxious and when you do, you feel scattered in a million directions. Your normally high energy rises even higher and you feel completely ungrounded and all over the place. Like fire and air, you are blown about, rising and dispersing. For you, stillness is a powerful means to reduce your stress and anxiety because stillness allows all the scattered aspects of you to settle back into oneness. Stillness with your heart facing upward is particularly helpful for you because your heart is connected so strongly to the heavens. The videos in the first part of this Workshop are generally most supportive to people who fall into this category.

Part 2: Depression

Those who are inward-focused and often struggle to summon enough energy to get through the day, tend to be very calm and grounded and a little bit of stress doesn’t shake them in the least. For you, stress builds slowly and cumulatively and you eventually experience it as a tremendous weight that pulls you down. Stress is more likely to make you feel depressed rather than anxious. Like water and earth, you are drawn ever downward when under stress, and it can seem almost impossible to lift yourself up, either physically or emotionally. For you, movement is an essential part of reducing stress and depression; it forces you out of inertia, gets energy flowing, and allows you to begin releasing the weight of the stress you are carrying. Along with movement, heart facing downward poses may be particularly helpful because your heart is so strongly connected to the earth. The following videos are generally most supportive to people who fall into this category.
